In 1986 Jack Charlton was the appointed as new Republic of Ireland manager. Few people knew it would be a move to transform Irish football.
He arrived in Dublin after a controversial selection process, but told all present at his first press conference he was not interested in discussing that matter.
In true Charlton style, he told the assembled media: “I can talk, you know that for a start. Can I manage? Well I’ve had a lifetime in the game.”
