A midlands meat processing plant has been closed due to confirmed cases of Covid-19.
RTÉ News understands that four cases have been confirmed at the Dawn Meats boning hall in Kilbeggan.
Meanwhile, in the Dáil last night concerns were raised about another meat plant, where it was claimed there have been 120 confirmed cases of the virus.
The decision to close the Kilbeggan facility is significant. It is the first time a meat processing plant has closed here due to the virus.
The company says the decision to close was taken with “an abundance of caution” and will not affect its ability to supply customers.
The news this morning follows confirmation from the Minister for Agriculture last night that his department was aware of six so-called clusters in meat plants. The minister confirmed that one of the plants was a boning facility.
The Dáil heard claims yesterday too that another company had 120 confirmed cases of the virus but was still operating.
Sinn Féin’s Spokesperson on Agriculture Brian Stanley claimed that the first cases emerged at that facility a month ago.
The company has not responded to a request for comment.
Close to 15,000 people work in meat processing here at more than 45 facilities.
Meat processing in the United States has been severely affected by the virus, but so far production levels here have not been affected, but there has been an impact at several plants.
