Everton midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin has been ruled out for another six months with an Achilles injury.
It is another huge blow for the 24-year-old, who has made just two appearances since joining the Toffees in a £25million deal from Mainz last summer.
Gbamin has been very unlucky with injuries at Everton and has suffered a fresh setback
He had been sidelined with two separate quad tears, which he picked up in August, before suffering his latest setback in training.
An Everton statement said: Jean-Philippe Gbamin is set to undergo surgery next week after suffering a serious Achilles injury in training.
It is expected the midfielder will then require an extensive period of rehabilitation.
The injury, sustained in a non-contact situation at USM Finch Farm, is unrelated to the quadriceps problem Gbamin had been working his way back from since August last year.
Everyone at the club is devastated for JP and we will ensure he gets all the support he needs throughout this challenging time.”
Gbamin is yet to play under Carlo Ancelotti, who took over at Goodison Park in December
Gbamins last appearance came in a 1-0 win over Watford last August.
The Ivory Coast international appears to have become another big-money Everton signing that has not worked out in recent years.
Moise Kean, brought in for £24.5m from Juventus last summer, has scored just once in 26 appearances this season.
Everton will be looking to improve on their 12th-placed position when the Premier League returns on June 17.
Carlo Ancelottis side are only six points from a European spot with nine games to go.
