The Ineos Grenadiers rider, 34, crashed just before the start of Monday’s third stage after a drinks bottle became lodged under his front wheel.
The Welshman dug in to complete the stage to Mount Etna but lost more than 12 minutes, effectively ending his hopes of winning the Grand Tour race.
