Roma co-owner James Pallotta could launch a takeover bid for Newcastle, reports claim.
Magpies fans were devastated when a Saudi-led consortium pulled the plug over a proposed buyout last week.
Pallotta became Roma co-owner in 2011 but is close to selling up
Amanda Staveleys company PCP Capital Partners was leading the £300million takeover of Newcastle, with Saudi Arabias Public Investment Fund (PIF) backing the deal.
A joint PCP and PIF statement, published when the deal collapsed, read: We feel great compassion for the Newcastle United fans with whom we shared a great commitment to help.
We would like to say that we truly appreciated your incredible expressions of support and your patience throughout this process. We are sorry it is not to be.
Now, Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb claim Pallotta is close to agreeing the £540m (600m) sale of Roma to the Friedkin Group.
The report adds Pallotta, who became co-owner and chairman of the Serie A giants in 2011, could reinvest those funds into a Newcastle takeover.
Newcastle fans had hoped Mike Ashley’s reign as owner was over
It is understood the US businessman has refused to comment on the recent rumours.
talkSPORT host Jim White revealed Staveley is not giving up hope of reviving her Newcastle takeover attempt, however.
He said: Ive just got off the phone with a tearful Amanda Staveley who said to me, I am absolutely heartbroken for the supporters of Newcastle, for club, and the community.
All the emotion of waiting and waiting, and the work shes done on this bid over the last two years, came out to me in that phone call.

The bid was real, its been there all the time, Ashley agreed to it, and they told me today they were going to allocate £250m more for the club, the academy and the community, but now its all gone.
Having said that, and I dont know how genuine this is, but as Amanda Staveley said goodbye to me, she added, ‘get it out there, though, we will not give up. We will not give up.
