Wigan have announced the resignation of manager Paul Cook.
The 53-year-old has decided to leave his post at the DW Stadium following the club’s relegation to League One.
Paul Cook saw his Wigan side pick up a point at Bristol City
Cook guided the Latics to 13th in the Championship this season, with this side thumping Hull City 8-0 just two weeks ago to give fans something to cheer about.
But his side were relegated from the second tier after Wigan were hit with a 12-point deduction having entered administration at the beginning of July.
The decision is subject to appeal but that ongoing process has had no affect on the decision for Cook to leave.
Its a blow for the club, with Cook becoming manager when Wigan were last relegated to League One in 2017.
Wigan’s Joe Williams is comforted by boss Paul Cook during their final day draw against Fulham, which confirmed their relegation from the Championship
In his first season the 53-year-old took Wigan to the League One title and FA Cup quarter-final, and managed to keep the Greater Manchester club in the Championship the following year.
But Wigans financial struggles have derailed his sides season, with the Latics looking comfortable in 13th place in the table before a 12-point penalty was added to their total following their final game of the season against Fulham.
Ending their campaign with back-to-back draws against Charlton and Fulham meant their points deduction was put into place this season to relegate them. Had they finished with three points more, Wigan would have stayed up and 12 points taken off them in the next Championship term.
Wigan will appeal against the punishment, though, with the case set to be heard on July 31.
