Timo Werner has been lauded as a ‘terrific’ and ‘excellent’ player by talkSPORT’s Bundesliga expert Kevin Hatchard ahead of his proposed move to Chelsea.
Shock reports emerged on Thursday evening claiming the Blues have all but wrapped up the £53million signing of Germany forward Werner, who will apparently sign a deal with Chelsea until 2025.
News of his impending move to Stamford Bridge stunned the football world with Werner widely expected to join Liverpool over the coming months.
Chelsea appear to have won the race to sign Timo Werner despite his long-term links with Liverpool
For the best part of a year the 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Anfield, with Jurgen Klopp said to have called him many times concerning a transfer and Werner himself allegedly wanting to play for Liverpool.
But it appears he will rock up at Stamford Bridge – not Anfield – next season to lead the line for Frank Lampard’s Blues.
So just what will Werner bring to Chelsea should the proposed £53m deal be wrapped up ahead of the 2020/21 Premier League season?
That is a very reasonable price for a player who is an established Germany international and for a player who, at the age of 24, has crammed in hundreds of games at senior level,” began Hatchard on Thursday’s Sports Bar.
He has worked very hard on his finishing; you go back to when he was in Stuttgart as a teenager and he spent loads of time training working purely on his finishing so that has improved.

Hes worked on the psychological aspect of his game; hes hired a psychologist at times to help him with that.
And under Julian Nagelsmann at Leipzig this season hes become a much more rounded footballer; hes more of a creator now and he can drop a bit deeper and play as a ten sometimes if necessary.
He isnt just a one-dimensional speedster in attack, so I think they are getting a terrific player.”
But why did Liverpool not press their transfer advantage and sign Werner, who is widely considered one of the best young forwards in European football.
Hatchard added: I think Liverpool having been interested in him have decided to walk away for financial reasons, and I think Chelsea have done really well to nick in there.”
Timo Werner through the years
Timo Werner began his career with Stuttgart before joining Leipzig in 2016, and his incredible development in recent years is clear to see…

  • 2013/14: Stuttgart – 35 appearances (5 goals/5 assists)
  • 2014/15: Stuttgart – 33 appearances (3 goals/1 assist)
  • 2015/16: Stuttgart – 36 appearances (7 goals/5 assists)
  • 2016/17: RB Leipzig – 32 appearances (21 goals/7 assists)
  • 2017/18: RB Leipzig – 45 appearances (21 goals/10 assists)
  • 2018/19: RB Leipzig – 37 appearances (19 goals/10 assists)
  • 2019/20: RB Leipzig – 40 appearances (31 goals/12 assists)

Blues boss Lampard is known to have been on the lookout for a new attacker for a number of months, and Hatchard has attempted to explain why Chelsea have settled on Werner ahead of alternate transfer targets.
One of the things that would attract Chelsea to him is that he can play a variety of roles,” added the Bundesliga commentator.
I think he is dangerous when he can pull into that half-space in the inside-left channel, but he can also play through the middle.
Nagelsmann is working with him to be more flexible and to get his head up and look, because sometimes he could be a player who would go missing in games; if the game wasnt going particularly well you wouldnt see him for big chunks of it.

He might score you goals but the all-round contribution wouldnt be as good; but now hes looking for teammates.
He is an excellent player and I think, potentially, Chelsea have got a very, very good player.
If it all gets wrapped up I think it would be a really smart signing.
