Bruno Fernandes has been a superstar for Manchester United since joining from Sporting CP in January – but it turns out the Red Devils could have saved more than £50MILLION on his signing if they’d waited a few months!
Fernandes, the midfielder, linked up with Man United at the end of the January window in a £68m deal and he’s been a revelation at Old Trafford.
Fernandes has enjoyed a remarkable start to life at Manchester United
Man United legend Bryan Robson has high hopes for Bruno Fernandes, claiming he can be the new Paul Scholes!
He scored three goals and created a further four in his first nine appearances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, and Fernandes’ influence had helped United move up to fifth in the Premier League table and into the FA Cup quarter-finals by the time football was suspended due to coronavirus.
And, according to Sporting CP’s president, the COVID-19 pandemic means United could have saved a staggering amount of money if only they’d waited to sign Fernandes until now.
The financial fallout due to coronavirus is expected to be huge for football clubs, and many involved in the game have played down the chances of big-money transfers going through this summer, with swap deals and loans more likely.
Player transfer values are expected to plummet when clubs are allowed to buy and sell individuals again, and the Sporting president believes Fernandes would be sold for as little as £17m because of COVID-19.
“The crisis caused by COVID-19 harms the European football industry in general,” said Frederico Varandas. “But, of all countries, Portugal is the most affected because 50 per cent of revenues come from the sale of players.
