The idea of lifelong appoints to the court was built in as a check on legislative and executive power. The original thought being that justices could write majority or dissenting opinions and decisions without having to worry about what that decision would mean for their career. Which, in theory, would let scotus justices make decisions based on the courage of their conviction based in law, instead of trying to please a sitting potus or congress.
